DescriptionOver 265 species of bird have been recorded on the reserve. Many species, such as Slavonian grebe, velvet scoter, Bewick's Swan and hooded crow, are rarities and have been seen only a few times. Some such as shearwaters, gannets, skuas and fulmars can be seen out at sea, usually during stormy weather and at high tide but they will almost never come in to land.

Almost 25 species of bird usually breed on the reserve. Mallard, tufted duck, eider, shelduck, coot, moorhen and little grebe nest within the gullery, whilst oystercatcher and ringed plover nest on the shingle beaches at the colony's edge.
