Description
The Loseley Estate was acquired by direct ancestors of the current owners at the beginning of the 16th Century and Loseley House was built between 1562 and 1568. The previous much smaller house was not considered by Elizabeth I as adequate for her to stay in and she 'requested' that something more substantial should be built!
The House, which is the More-Molyneux family's home, has a number of rooms which are open to the public during the Summer Season (Tours). The Great Hall and the Drawing Room are particularly special, but Other Rooms, including the King's Room and the Queen's Room, are of particular historical interest.
The Walled Garden, based on a design by Gertrude Jekyll, has been compared favourably with gardens of national repute and contains a series of "rooms" with different themes running through them. The redevelopment of the Garden commenced in 1993/4 with the Rose Garden and continued with the Herb Garden, Flower Garden, White Garden and, most recently, the organic Vegetable and Cut Flower Garden.
The Gardens are surrounded by a magnificent old wall of similar age to the House and contain a Vine Walk, a huge spread of Wisteria, the Moat and Moat Walk, and the old Mulberry Tree around which a family prophesy revolves.
A Plant Sales area is open in the Summer Season where plants grown in the Garden are available for sale.
Group Tours can be arranged but most visitors just like to wander around and enjoy the sights, sounds and heady perfumes.
