DescriptionIn the main house a spectacular series of diverse and authentically furnished rooms, trace the American way of life from colonial times to the mid 19th century.

A temporary exhibition is held each year in the Exhibition Gallery. In 2006 this is PLAYBACK: A Celebration of American Toys and Games (18 March – 29 October)

To accompany this exhibition is a display of Dallas Pratt’s collection of renaissance maps.

There are extensive grounds containing a Mount Vernon Garden, an American Arboretum and museum trails.

In the main house fifteen rooms depict how the settlers lived, the Pennsylvania-Germans, the Shakers and a wonderfully opulent New Orleans Bedroom of 1860. There is also a delightful Stencilled Bedroom, an elegant Greek Revival Dining Room and a reconstruction of a 1776 farmhouse tavern called Conkey’s Tavern.
