Description
The Leighton Buzzard Light Railway (LBLR) is a narrow-gauge light railway in the town of Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, England It operates on a 2 ft (610 mm) gauge, and is just under 3mi (4.8km) in length. The railway was opened 1919 as an industrial railway to transport sand from local quarries to a railhead with the main line system. Most of the original rolling stock was surplus purchased from the War Department and included two steam locomotives, although these were disposed of early in the life of the railway. For most of its existence the line was operated using petrol and diesel locomotives built by the Motor Rail company of Bedford. It was one of the first railways in Britain to be entirely operated by internal combustion locomotives. The line is somewhat unusual as it runs mostly through a modern housing estate, which was built in the 1970s, although the last half mile of the line runs through countryside. There are a number of open level crossings for which trains have to stop.Today a number of preserved steam and diesel locomotives run on the line. There is a significant collection of historic industrial railway locomotives on display at Stonehenge Works at the northern end of the line.
