The immaculately kept Gardens (25 acres in all) are part woodland, part formal and essentially Victorian in character, though never heavy or oppressive. The 200-acre 'natural' parkland is in fact the result of the late 18th century planting of Lord George Cavendish. In the early 19th century several new features were added: an arboretum, a conservatory, balustraded terraces by the House, and a large walled kitchen garden.

Standing close to Hadrian's Wall, the Augustinian priory of Lanercost was much involved in the Anglo-Scottish wars. During his last campaign in 1306-7 the mortally sick Edward I rested here for six months, before dying as he prepared to enter Scotland. The abbey suffered terribly from Scottish raids, being sacked at least four times. Birdoswald Fort is an ancient Roman fort towards the western end of Hadrian's Wall. As of 2005, it is the only site on Hadrian's Wall at which significant occupation in the post-Roman period has been proven, and it is subject to a long-term archaeological programme under the directorship of Tony Wilmott.

Furness Abbey, or St Mary of Furness is a Cistercian monastery situated in the Furness region of Cumbria.
Founded in 1123 by Stephen, Count of Blois, it was built originally for the Order of Savigny. Located in the 'Valley of the Deadly Nightshade', the abbey is built entirely out of local sandstone. This extensive working mill was begun in 1835 to produce the wooden bobbins vital to the Lancashire spinning and weaving industries. Although small compared to other mills, some 250 men and boys (some drafted in from workhouses) worked here in often arduous conditions to produce a quarter of a million bobbins a week. [more]

Swimming baths in Wigton, carlisle. Wigton Baths regularly takes part in the 10p swim scheme which is sponsored by Allerdale Borough Council and enables local children to swim for 10p during specified sessions in the school holidays.
