With a history stretching back over sixteen centuries, Pevensey Castle chronicles more graphically than any other fortress the story of Britain's south coast defences. Beginning in the 4th century as one of the last and strongest of the Roman 'Saxon Shore' forts - two-thirds of whose towered walls still stand - it was the landing place of William the Conqueror's army in 1066.
During the decades after the Conquest the fort was converted into a full-scale Norman castle, with a... [more]

The impressive ruins of an abbey of Premonstratensian 'white canons', on the Kent-Sussex border. They include much of the 13th to 15th-century church, the chapter house, and a picturesque 14th-century gatehouse. Now set in an 18th-century landscape designed by Humphry Repton, the famous landscape gardener who also planned the grounds of Kenwood House in London. Parts of the 'Georgian Gothick' Dower House are also open to visitors. [more]

In the ruins of Battle Abbey, which King William later built to commemorate the event, you can stand on the very spot where the defeated King Harold fell.
The battlefield - later part of the abbey's Great Park - and the abbey were purchased for... [more]

Much of the outer limit of the present day Forest boundary still follows the ancient pale whose stake-lined bank and ditch were built to allow deer to enter the Forest but not to leave it. The heathland has been created bycenturies of grazing, woodland clearance and other forms of interference by man. Since then it has developed into one of the largest tourist attractions in Sussex, yet it still remains true to its objectives of the preservation for posterity of a country branch line, its steam locomotives, coaches and goods stock, signalling systems, stations and operating practices.
